Provincia di Mantova, Italy
The Province of Mantova, part of the Italian Region Lombardy, is a local public authority aimed at promoting the general development of the area, in accordance with environmental standards and fundamental rights granted by Italian constitution.
The Province:
- fosters a balanced development of the area;
- cares for and valorises the environmental, natural and cultural resources;
- promotes the implementation of an integrate welfare system with particular reference to less favoured subjects; and contributes to foster equal opportunities
Economic activities and features
Companies
41,000 companies are registered by the Chamber of Commerce of Mantua, most of them are small or medium sized (99,24% have less than 40 employees).
About one third of them deal with artisan or handicraft activities.
About 50 large companies deal with chemical, mechanical and clothing sector, with more than 250 employees each.
The province has always based its economic strength on agriculture.
In the area: today more than 12,000 firms are based in agriculture.
Manufacturing
In this area the main productive initiatives in the industrial field were linked to public governmental policies (such as an important oil refinery factory established near Mantova).
The province industry consists of 4 main sectors:
- clothing, textile, hosiery;
- food industry
- mechanical (with relevant European groups in metallurgical and engeneering industries)
- wood-working chipboard production, brushes, paint-brushes.
One interesting productive feature is the organisation into Industrial districts.
Environmental area
The Province of Mantova environmental area activities are mainly:
- Environmental protection;
- Realisation of safeguard and maintenance interventions of naturalistic habitats and of promotion and support of initiatives aimed at favouring a human-nature relationship, in line with a social development more observant of natural laws;
- Implementation of actions finalised to a sustainable development trough the updating of environmental balance and trough the development of Local Agenda 21 activities;
- Planning and realisation of monitoring for waste management activities; support to the municipalities for the optimisation of waste cycle management;
- Development of monitoring activities for air quality and emissions control;
- Pollution prevention and reduction; improvement of water quality;
- Creation of a reference framework of main environmental risks concerning the Provincial territory;
- Organisation of training course in schools in field environmental protection
Socio-economic development area
The Province of Mantova socio-economic development area activities are:
- Support and promotion of economic local development and socio-economic planning in order to favouring and sustaining industries, handicraft, territorial co-operation, trade, technological innovation;
- Co-ordination and support to public planning in Objective 2 area;
- Socio-economic planning trough projects strategic definition.
