Climate information for the governance sector: from seasons to years ahead

Climate change is increasingly affecting regions and communities across Europe, creating growing challenges for governance and decision-making. As extreme events like heatwaves, heavy rainfall and droughts are becoming more and more frequent, adequate adaptation strategies should be put in place, related to infrastructure, public services, water management and urban planning, among others. 

Local and regional authorities are thus facing an increasing need for reliable climate information that can support their short- and long-term planning, and help strengthen climate resilience.

To address this, the European project ASPECT has been working with stakeholders in the governance sector to better understand how climate predictions can support decision-making processes. Focusing on the Emilia-Romagna region, as one of the project’s Super Users, we worked to identify and provide information that can inform planning and adaptation efforts. 

Following a co-production approach, the project has explored what type of climate information is most relevant, how it can be applied in practice, and which indicators can help address current and future adaptation challenges.

This work is explored at an upcoming webinar held by the ASPECT project Monday 15 June 2026 at 15:00-16:00 CEST, dedicated to climate information for the governance sector.

In this webinar, we will explore the challenges that climate change poses for the governance sector and discuss the role climate predictions play in supporting adaptation and resilience planning. Next, we will take a closer look at the work carried out in the Emilia-Romagna case study to identify the user needs and co-develop climate indicators related to extreme rainfall and heatwaves. 

The webinar will also provide an opportunity to discuss the range of challenges faced in other regions and reflect on how this type of climate information could be applied in different contexts.
